Women empowerment

The Women Empowerment project in Step Verder gives women the opportunity to acquire a new skill and to get to know other women.

There are sewing classes in which a thorough course in making clothes is given by learning to take measurements, make patterns and be able to produce clothes according to your own design. This skill allows women to make clothes for themselves or their children, mend clothes and make clothes to order. The production of African women's clothing is central to this, but trousers and jackets are also made, for example.

During the craft lessons, the women make jewelry and bags. There is an annual excursion to a museum or textile factory for inspiration. Working with various materials and techniques for making salable products is important, but developing your own creativity and relaxation are not inferior to this.

Catering and cake decorating are two more developing skills that we hope to be able to offer in the future.

Participating women come for a longer period of time and make many new friendships and develop new networks. The sewing lessons are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and the crafts on Saturdays.

The women present their skills twice a year during a fashion show.
