Society for African Missions (SMA)

The Society for African Missions works in Stap Verder with two organizations: the Formation Center and the West African Pastorate Foundation. The coordinator of both organizations is Liesbeth Glas.

The Society for African Missions (SMA) actively seeks contemporary forms of mission  by working for justice, entering into a dialogue with respect for the individuality of cultures and supporting people in their struggle for better living conditions.

She is inspired by the example of Jesus of Nazareth. After all, he shows us how God's compassion for this world can take shape

Missionary work therefore means taking sides: standing on the side of people who do not count in today's society. This work on justice is actually a task for every person. This is how the idea grew within the SMA to give “lay people” the opportunity to participate in this, in addition to priests and brothers. The Training Center was established for this purpose in 1985.

We are looking for people who want to be deployed to West Africa (Ghana, Tanzania, Liberia) for a period of four years to be deployed as missionary field workers. The broadcasts take place within small-scale projects based on solidarity with the underprivileged, on the basis of compensation for living allowance and insurance, partly supported by contributions from others.

The SMA Training Center wants to be a place where people can prepare for this contemporary missionary fieldwork. During this preparation, she focuses in particular on Africa and the Africans. And in particular those Africans for whom a dignified existence is in jeopardy. The aim of the Training Center is to form a missionary group of people who, as a member of the SMA, will work in the developing world as well as in the Netherlands.  can be used.

After your return, the SMA asks you to use the experiences gained in Africa to work towards a more just society in the Netherlands and to commit yourself to  missionary awareness. Among other things, by creating a greater awareness of relationships in the world and a more correct attitude towards Africans in our society.
